A Memorable Experience with a Fiji Tour Operator – Rakiraki

Navicaters Team · Field notes · Pacific tourism

Authentic Experiences. Real Fiji. — A traditional kava (sevusevu) preparation in Rakiraki, Fiji. Navicaters Limited.

When people think about tourism in Fiji, places like Nadi, Denarau and the Coral Coast usually come to mind. They're well-known, well-marketed and easy to find.

But some of the country's most authentic experiences exist beyond those familiar destinations.

One of our most memorable visits was with a tour operator in Rakiraki. During our conversations, he shared something that has stayed with us ever since.

"There isn't enough awareness of what we offer here."

He explained that many operators outside of Nadi face a common challenge. While Nadi continues to be Fiji's primary tourism hub, businesses in other regions often struggle with visibility. Many travellers simply don't know these experiences exist, and operators are left trying to promote themselves with limited digital marketing resources.

Listening to his perspective changed the way we looked at tourism in Fiji.

Rather than just hearing about the challenge, we experienced firsthand what makes Rakiraki so special.

We visited Narara Village, where we were welcomed with a traditional sevusevu (kava ceremony). It wasn't something created for tourists—it was a genuine cultural experience that gave us a glimpse into everyday village life and the customs that continue to be passed down through generations.

We also visited Rakiraki District School, another experience that reminded us that travel isn't only about ticking destinations off a list. Sometimes it's about understanding the people, communities and stories that make a place unique.

Those moments made us reflect on how many visitors may never discover experiences like these simply because they aren't visible online.

As a team at Navicaters Limited, this visit gave us something more valuable than just another client meeting.

It gave us perspective.

It helped us better understand the challenges regional tour operators face—not because their experiences aren't worthwhile, but because they often don't have the same exposure or digital presence as businesses in larger tourism centres.

For us, that's where the opportunity lies.

Our goal isn't simply to build booking systems or create digital storefronts. It's to help operators showcase the experiences that already exist, making it easier for travellers to discover them and easier for local businesses to grow.

Some of Fiji's most meaningful tourism experiences are found away from the busiest destinations.

Sometimes, all they need is the opportunity to be seen.

Our visit to Rakiraki was more than a client meeting—it was a reminder that some of Fiji's most authentic experiences are waiting to be discovered. We're grateful for the opportunity to learn from local operators and to play a small part in helping their stories reach more travellers.
